Terracura Smiley Western Cape

Wines from South Africa is going through a revival, where quality is becoming increasingly better thanks to keen and passionate winemakers who want to showcase the beauty of what they have to offer.  This Smiley red is a great example of the talent that is coming out of this beautiful country.

Terracura Smiley is a non-vintage wine, having a blend of not only different grapes, but also different vintages from the Swartland area of South Africa.  It has a blend of Cinsault (50%), Mouvedre (35%), and Tinta Barocca (11%), and Syrah (4%).

A natural wine of sorts, as the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts, un-fined, unfiltered, and no acidification.

Medium purple in colour, this bold red notes of blackberries, plum and ripe black cherries.  There is plenty of complexity as mid way through the palate flavours of spice like cloves and star anise start to show, with hints violet, vanilla and lots of earth  reveal themselves one by one. The wine has a nice, refreshing acidity with medium grained, slightly raspy tannins creating texture and structure.  The fruit is has depth and richness yet very fresh, making for easy drinking.  The finish focuses more on red fruit like red cherries and cranberries mixed with plenty of earth and spice.  A wine with lots of dimension and power. This paired so wonderfully with my slow roasted leg of lamb, and veg. Thoroughly enjoyed this wine.

*Just a note, that this wine got much better after a couple of days being opened, so I recommend to decant it a few hours before serving.  Or of you’re like me, have a nice glass over the course of a few days to taste it’s delicious evolution.
