Poças Vale de Cavalos 2017

Poças Vale de Cavalos 2017

SAQ: 12455184 $17.95

A family run affair, Poças has been in business since 1918 and just last year, celebrated its centennial. They produce outstanding quality port , as well as beautiful still wines like this red for example, the Vale de Cavalos which is a blend of  Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Borroca and Tinta Roiz.

Grapes were hand harvested followed by temperature controlled fermentation with some extended maceration before aging in American and French oak casks (300L) for 8 months, followed by stainless steel until bottling.

Refined notes of black fruit like black cherries, blackberries and blueberries with generous layers of spice and vanilla. There is a ripeness of fruit without it moving towards the ‘cooked fruit’ character of wine sometimes can overwhelm the palate.  It is medium bodied, and its fine acidity give intensity.  Lingering flavours of spice, earth and underbrush with round tannins and a finish on  perfumed fruit flavours.  This wine has an excellent balance of fruit, acidity and tannin.

A charming wine, this one of my favourite Portugese reds as I find the quality is amazing given its under $20 price tag.

Drink now or in the next 4-5 years.
