Giving the gift of time – and wine- this Mother’s Day

It goes without saying that Mom certainly deserves some really special treatment this year.  If you’ve got a Mom who is taking care of the home, cooking, entertaining, educating the kids, and likely working full time from you home..then it might be a good idea to show her how much she is loved and appreciated this Mother’s Day.  As a Mom myself, I can tell you that I do not want a day off from being a Mom, but I would really love a day off from all the Mom responsibilities.

So if you know a Mom who appreciates a glass of wine, treat her to one ( or more ) of the  following wine recommendations which also happens to give the gift of time.

Borges Fita Azul Attitude Brut Reserva

SAQ: 136402277 $12.25

So here we have the Fita Azul Attitude from Portugal. It’s a blend of a few different white grape varieties, which gives the wine  beautiful aromatics and flavours like citrus, apricot,  notes of white flowers and pastries.  The pretty delicate bubbles create excellent aesthetics and texture. The acidity is bright and refreshing,  with just a hint of sweetness keeping it balanced and elegant. This wine is made in the traditional method ( second fermentation in the bottle ) and it has been left on its lees for 15 months, which it graces the wine with those delicious pastry notes that I was talking about earlier making it ideal to have with croissants, scones and fruit.

Sumarroca Tuví Penedes 2019

SAQ Code: 13574687 $15.00

This is coming from Bodega Sumarocca, an organic and sustainable winery in the Penedès region of Spain. This is a blend of Xarell-lo Gewurtraminer, Riesling and Viogner –  a very aromatic and refreshing wine with lots of character and body.  It’s very easy going and  approachable with lots of stone fruit character like pear, peach, mango , and citrus. It has beautiful floral notes with a nice streak of minerality and bright acidity. Due to the fact that it has spent some time on its fine lees, it offers a nice plump palate without the heaviness. Tell mom to grab a book, sit back and enjoy as this wine is only $15.00 at the SAQ.

The name of the wine is quiet cute also. In Catalan, ‘Tu’ means ‘you’ and ‘ví’ means wine…so it translates into ‘your wine’. Or not. Tuví or Not To Be.

Charles and Charles Columbia Valley Rosé $16.75

When I think about wine on Mother’s Day, I think about rosé. Its fruity, its floral, and its pink.  I highly recommend this one by Charles and Charles from Washington.

This wine is a blend of a bunch of different grapes like Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, and the list goes on…. Its  really fun wine, with excellent acidity,  ripe red- berry fruit characteristics, with lots of floral undertones.  The ripeness of the fruit gives the impression of sweetness, but in fact it’s a dry wine with a nice acidic backbone. All of that red berry fruit like strawberries and raspberries would pair so nicely with some sort of berry vanilla cake like the one seen here. So, you know…take the time…bake mom a cake, and pour her a glass of this delicious rose, and she’ll be all set Only $16.75 at the SAQ.

Château Larose-Trintaudon Haut-Médoc 2015

SAQ: 11835388  $26.35

Ah…. this is a such an amazing treat, and the perfect wine to spoil Mom with.   If I could describe this wine in one word , it would be elegant . This is THE wine to indulge in. Have it with a nice cheese board, a home cooked meal, or better yet – draw a bubble bath for Mom, pass her some dark chocolate and pour her a glass of this dreamy Bordeaux.

This wine is made with 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 6% of Petit Verdot.  There are notes of ripe blackberries, black cherries, notes of dark chocolate, bits of spice and vanilla.  The medium bodied wine has a plump, round mouth feel, with plenty of elegance and refreshment.  It gives  such an incredible depth of flavour with a long persistent finish, that it takes you away for a split second to the vineyards of the winery in the Haute Médoc. ( Trust me. 😉 ).

This wine is from 2015,  but the 2016 vintage will be out shortly at the SAQ.
